Citation Guideline Powerpoint
Resources Used
http://nausetschools.org/research/works2.htm
The Nauset Public Schools introduce citations in first grade in a very basic format, then gradually increase the expectations each year building up to the MLA format for citation. This web site introduces the expectations by grade level.

This site provides a color coded method for citations, using the MLA format.
Citation Expectations for Grades 1 - 4:
Grade 1
Grade 2
Grade 3
Grade 4
Robin's Part: Activities for teaching copyright and citations to primary students in a brain-friendly way:
1. You Wouldn't Steal Someone's Crayon, Would You?
The Tech & Learning website has this great lesson plan with an easy way to explain copyright to the youngest students.
See http://www.techlearning.com/article/1346/
2. Kids Are Authors!
First model what the parts of a citation would look like if one of your students wrote a book.
Then have students make up their own book title and cite them on paper. Have the students swap with a partner to check their work.
3. Color-Coded Kids!
Need some movement? Based on the citation you are teaching, select those colors. Group children by color (either what they are wearing,
by passing them a scarf or a card). Then have them get into groups with 1 of each color. Their job is to line up in order of the citation
by color (blue is first for author, purple for title, green for publisher and pink for date). It makes kids use gross-motor and movement
while they problem solve the order of the citation elements! Great for busy bodies, lining-up or waiting for the teacher to arrive!

Amy,
I added in separate pages for grade expectations...is this what you envisioned? Susan, I hope you don't mind that I took the liberty of creating your pages too....now we just have to copy and paste our 'stuff' into them....If you don't like the wording or color, feel free to change:) No worries.

Hi Everyone - We decided as a group that the younger students wouldn't be able to italicize so we changed all to underline. I took the liberty of changing fourth grade citation expectations in line with Nauset's examples. Is that ok? I can change them but by the fourth grade I expected students would prepare a paper on the computer. So, Amy, I think that the brief intro of using Nauset should also include a brief mention of the liberties we took given children's abilities in the early grades. What do you think?
Robyn, do you think you can change the color of your part to black to be consistent with the rest of the content? Amy, maybe you will do this when you revise?? Also, should Robyn's content be a wiki, too?
I haven't had a chance to see the .ppt in its entirety. When it's done can it be posted for review? I'm hoping the slides can have a consistent look.
Sorry for all the details...that's me.
Susan

Kelly F -- In answer to your question, we chose Nauset because they had defined GLEs for citations. It's cool that you graduated from that school district, though. Susan

Hi all~
I want the activities section to 'pop' to be fun!Remember the afterschool attention span of our tired teachers. Also we should remember the 'three click rule' from the last class. Too many pages and clicking and we lose our audience! It already takes three clicks to get to our Williston 1 page. Let's put what we have right here! Keep it simple for all to see.
We also need a title or theme of our In-Service with a brief summary so people know what kind of information they will find here. ~ Robin

Besides....blue indicates a live link and when things are not links and they are blue it is very confusing!

Susan,
Thanks for fixing my 'snafoos' (AKA mistakes!):)
I think Robin's activities section is fine in that color - I say keep it the way it is OR put it in its own wiki page - either choice will work. but either way, I like the color.
I will be at class at 8:30 on Saturday...
We will do just fine:)

I have added a link on color blindness. I think the impact of color blindness on education should be quickly mentioned. The website has a bullet list of tips for teachers of color blind students. In addition, the site hosts a diagnostic test.

Oh, darn, I thought maybe someone else was from the Cape. Did you know that Nauset is Kathy Schrock's district? That's where she is the Tech Coordinator! (Maybe that's part of the reason they had the citation GLEs!)
